THE OASIS TOWNSVILLE A CATALYST FOR HEALTH ECONOMY SAVINGS

Tuesday, 14 May 2024

The Oasis Townsville proudly announces its groundbreaking achievement in saving the health economy, demonstrating a remarkable $2 return for every $1 spent, saving over $2.5 million in the last 6 months. Utilising data calculated from the Australian Social Value Bank (ASVB), The Oasis has meticulously quantified its impact through three key programs: Planning and Linkages, Social Connections, and Employment. These initiatives have not only bolstered community wellbeing and mental health but have also delivered substantial economic benefits to the Veteran health economy.

The Chair of The Oasis Townsville, Lieutenant General John Caligari, AO, DSC (Ret'd), said at The Oasis Townsville, we're committed to enhancing the overall health and vitality of our community.

“Our vision is to cultivate a thriving, respected, vibrant, and well-supported veteran community, enhancing the economic and social prosperity of Townsville.

Through our programs and partnerships, we've not only fostered social connections and facilitated employment but have also delivered significant savings to the health economy. This achievement underscores our dedication to making a meaningful and positive difference in the lives of Veterans, their families, and the broader community" Mr Caligari said.

The Australian Social Value Bank (ASVB) currently contains 63 different social values related to all aspects of Australian life. They have been derived from Australian data sets, using a cutting-edge approach called Wellbeing Valuation. These datasets are longitudinal studies funded by the Australian Government and created by Melbourne University.

Wellbeing Valuation involves measuring the value of intangible (non-market) outcomes by using data on people's wellbeing. This innovative cost-benefit method is used to calculate the primary benefits to individuals, such as improved self-esteem.

The ASVB also measures secondary benefits to others, which include impacts like cost savings to government via reduced Centrelink payments and fewer visits to General Practitioners (GPs).

"The methodologies used within the ASVB, Wellbeing Valuation, and Cost Benefit Analysis, are considered best-practice and are globally endorsed by the Australian Government and the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD)," Mr Caligari said.

1. Planning and Linkage Program:
The Oasis Townsville's Planning and Linkages program has streamlined access to essential and best health services for Veterans and their families. By providing personalised referrals and navigation support, individuals can seamlessly connect with healthcare providers and resources, reducing unnecessary healthcare costs and improving health outcomes.

2. Social Connections Initiative:
Through the 100-plus social engagement activities and events each month involving over 1,000 people, The Oasis has cultivated a sense of belonging and camaraderie among Veterans, their families and the Townsville Community. By combating social isolation and promoting mental wellbeing, this initiative has contributed to improving mental health and reduced healthcare utilisation rates and associated costs.

3. Employment Support Services:
The Oasis' Employment Support Service has empowered Veterans and family members to re-enter the workforce or pursue meaningful career opportunities. By facilitating job placements, skill development programs, and entrepreneurship initiatives, The Oasis has not only boosted economic productivity but has also reduced reliance on healthcare support services.

These programs exemplify The Oasis Townsville's commitment to fostering holistic health and well-being within the community, transcending traditional healthcare paradigms to deliver tangible economic benefits.

Mr Caligari said as we continue to expand our impact and reach, we remain steadfast in our mission to provide a 'single front door' for all members of the Veteran community in Townsville both ex-serving and serving, including their family and friends. A particular focus is current Australian Defence Force members who have begun thinking about transitioning to connect and integrate into the Townsville Community.

The Oasis Townsville is proud to be a catalyst for change, demonstrating that investments in community wellbeing, and taking an innovative psychosocial approach yield significant returns for all Veterans and their families particularly in mental health."
