Tell us about yourself

I grew up in Bendigo, Victoria, along with six siblings. I Joined The Royal Australian Army Transport Corps in 1982 and continued on with a 34 year career before retiring in 2015.
My Regimental Sergeant Major roles were RSM 9 and 10 Force Support Battalion, 17th Service Support Brigade and RSM Ceremonial Australian Defence Force (RSM-C ADF) as the Ceremonial & Protocol Advisor for Defence. As an RSM, some of my highlights were participating in the United States of America Army’s Keystone Program, in Norfolk Virginia and attending many DVA Veteran’s missions taking Australia’s “national treasures” back to previous conflicts all over the world including Singapore, Timor Leste, England, France and I will never forget being the RSM for ANZAC Day at the official Dawn Service at Villers Bretonneux in 2012. In 2000/2001 I Deployed to East Timor as the Squadron Sergeant Major of the Force Logistic Squadron 2 and again in 2006/2007 to Kuwait as the inaugural Regimental Sergeant Major of the Force Logistic Asset.
I commissioned to Major for my last three years as a Detachment Commander responsible for transitioning over 1500 soldiers and officers many with complex medical needs. Some of my volunteering roles since 2014 and post retirement: Director of Veterans Off The Streets Australia, Welfare officer and community liaison with the Townsville RSL sub branch, Director of the Oasis Tsv, Steering committee member for Operation Compass, President NQ Phoenix Dragon Boating Club, Team Rubicon Australia, as the Townsville Disaster response Coordinator during monsoonal event and the Townsville Community Rebuild Project.

Why have you joined the team at The Oasis Townsville?

I was first involved with the concept of a “veteran hub” in Jun 2016, at the time I was heavily involved with a number of organisations as a volunteer veteran’s advocate addressing the needs for veterans and their families. I wanted to be part of an organization that would create opportunities for those that have served. No one organisation was doing this in Townsville. A few retired veterans got together and building on a vision that was held by many we created an organisation that would do just that, I am very pleased to be one of the founding Directors of the Oasis Townsville.

What are you most proud of in your life?

My amazing Army career, 34 years packed with wonderful experiences, outstanding opportunities and life-long friendships.

What’s the best fun you’ve had with family and/or friends?

I love travelling around with my family, seeing new and exciting places throughout our beautiful country and/or all over the world. The best holiday was with Anita to Bora Bora in 2016 for our retirement. I always have lots of fun catching up with friends for visits, holidays and/or sporting adventures with my dragon boat club.
