THE final concept designs for a support hub for Australian Defence Force personnel and veterans in Townsville have been revealed.

The Oasis Townsville defence hub is one step closer to starting construction with the completion of designs for the precinct to be located on the corner of Darter and Colvin streets, Oonoonba.

The 2018-19 State Budget included $1.8 million to secure the land and building. The Government has also allocated up to $4.3 million towards the first phase, which includes the refurbishment of the existing building.

The facility hopes to provide 24-hour welfare support and employment transition services to serving and ex-ADF personnel and their families.

Mundingburra MP Coralee O’Rourke is expected to today unveil the complete design of the Oasis.

“We’ve taken the necessary time to plan and design for a service that truly responds to the needs of veterans,” she said.

“The Oasis Townsville will be a true sanctuary for veterans, providing a range of services for military personnel and their families as they transition out of the defence force.

“The result of our close collaboration will deliver so much more than the simple refurbishment of the existing building for the defence community in Townsville.”

The first phase of the project is due to be completed in the second half of 2019 and includes repurposing the existing building to provide a modern facility that will support the services provided at the precinct.

It will also include a cafe that will be open to the public.

Subsequent phases of the project will include the construction of pavilions, which will enable the service to expand as the demand increases.

In addition to providing funding for the first phase of the project, the State Government will also provide $30,000 towards the cost of developing a service model for the defence hub.

“The development of the service model needs to ensure there is flexibility enabling the service to grow and that it will best suit the needs of veterans and make linkages to existing services in the area,” Mrs O’Rourke said.

“The Palaszczuk Government is delivering on our election commitment to establish a defence hub in Townsville, and the work we have done to date will ensure that we deliver a quality service for the defence community and their families.”
