WOODWORKING CRAFTMANSHIP CONNECTS VETERANS

Tuesday 27 June 2023

Veterans have cut and polished their way to a brand-new BBQ table that will be utilised at their fortnightly Banjo Breaky catch ups. The handcrafted BBQ Table has been completely built by local Townsville Veterans, as part of The Oasis Townsville’s Connections Program.

The Woodworking Project has seen several Veterans and family members come together weekly to build this beautifully crafted table, all with the support from the Rotary Club of Townsville Sunrise who sponsored this connections activity and Studio Dubbeld who facilitated the Veterans craftmanship.

The General Manager of The Oasis Townsville, Angie Barsby said the relationships and connections that have formed as a result of this project has been inspirational and really demonstrates how important these types of activities are in changing the lives of the Veteran Community.

“We extend our deepest gratitude to the Rotary Club of Townsville Sunrise for their generous donation, which has not only made the creation of the incredible BBQ tables possible but has provided veterans with skills and facilitated life changing connections that will have a lasting impact,” Mrs Barsby said.

The Oasis Townsville’s Connections Program creates activities especially designed to bring Veterans and their families together to learn new skills and meet likeminded people.

Mrs Barsby said “The tables situated alongside the BBQs at The Oasis will serve as a space for fostering connections, where conversations are shared over meals, through engaging activities, or simply by taking a seat and appreciating the breathtaking view.”

“Each week a variety of connections activities are available for Veterans and their families to attend. Everything from cooking classes, to Banjo Breaky’s, tabletop gaming, yoga, qi-gong, watercolour art classes, sewing classes, choir and pipes and drums there is something for everyone’s interests.

If there’s anyone else looking to sponsor a connection activity or provide a donation to help support our mission, The Oasis Townsville would love to hear from you.”
