Vets Cast, Catch & Cook to Lure Nutritional Benefits

Thursday 13 October 2022

Townsville Veterans are casting their fishing lines to catch the ‘big one’ in preparation for the BBQ cook off for the Eat Well campaign during Veterans Health Week.

The General Manager for The Oasis Townsville, Angie Barsby said this year is all about Eating Well and how nutrition contributes to physical health, mental health and social health, and what better way to do this than to cast a line and cook with some mates.

“The Oasis Townsville has partnered with Reeling Veterans to bring 2 days of activities that gets Veterans out enjoying the fresh air and the natural resources Townsville has to offer. Day 1 will see the Veterans cruising the Ross River in the Reeling Veterans boat followed by participants travelling to The Oasis Townsville on Day 2 for a BBQ cook off where they will learn how to fillet their fish and prepare a nutritious meal,” Mrs Barsby said.

“Socially connecting is vital when supporting Veterans whether they are transitioning out of Defence or have already transitioned. Everyone thinks they are just having fun, and it’s a fun day out, but it’s so much more than that.

“Social connections provide a safe, shared experience that allows conversations to evolve in a natural manner. To talk about what’s going on in their life, any issues they may be facing or any great things that are going on, and most importantly for them to know they are not alone.”

Creating social connections activities and maintaining a presence where Veterans and their families are welcome to connect with The Oasis Townsville is what we do.

Mrs Barsby said with over 700 ADF members in Townsville transitioning into civilian life each year, it’s vitally important that The Oasis Townsville continues to connect, plan, link, educate and find jobs for Veterans and their families.

“We have events going on every week at The Oasis Townsville, not just for Veterans and their families, but also the wider Townsville community,” Mrs Barsby said.

“The Cast, Catch and Cook event will take place on Thursday 13 and Friday 14 of October 2022.”
