Veterans camp grows connections

Sunday 8 August 2021

An innovative camp specifically designed to engage and support the wellbeing of local veterans and encourage them to connect with others and the natural environment kicks off today (Monday, 9 August).

The five-day, three-night adventure camp is an initiative of The Oasis Townsville, a charitable organisation committed to supporting the transition of service personnel from the Australia Defence Force into the civilian community.

The Oasis Wellbeing Program Manager, Colleen Wing said the aim of the camp is to grow positive connections and promote a healthy and active lifestyle along with discovering alternative forms of exercise

“We know that providing platforms for our veterans to engage and connect is an important part of their transition from the Defence Force,” Ms Wing said.

“We have been delighted by the interest from veterans in the camp and it is now fully booked with 13 people accepted

“The five-day, three-night camp will take place in Paluma and includes a variety of custom-designed activities by Outer Limits Adventure and includes hikes through the beautiful rainforest, mountain bike riding, swimming, kayaking, canoeing in the dam, and some challenging high rope courses.

“A key part of the camp will be the conversations held at the nightly campfires. This will provide opportunities for participants to connect and talk to others who are going through similar challenges that are part of transitioning and or share their success stories in building and sustaining their own businesses

“Representatives from The Oasis, including myself, will be there every step of the way and to help start the conversations and just be there to better understand how we can continue to support our diggers during what is sometimes the most challenging times of their lives.

“We have also included a number of follow-up activities that will provide participants the opportunity to connect and talk about the camp and find out more on the support available to them during their transition from Defence” as well as connection to local businesses to further grow and enhance their love of alternate physical activities

The Oasis Townsville is a Townsville based, charity organisation located at The Village, Oonoonba. The organisation is a home base and ‘single front door’ for members of the veteran community, both serving and ex-serving and their families to provide support for their transition, connection and integration into the community.
