Veteran Home Base handed the keys to new facility

Sunday, 9 May 2021

A local organisation committed to supporting the veteran community has been handed the keys to their new facility and will be working tirelessly over the next few weeks to move in and officially open their doors.

The Oasis Townsville, a charity organisation with a mission to provide a home base and ‘single front door’ for members of the Ex-ADF community to support their transition, connection and integration into the Townsville community, is expected to officially open on 1 June.

The Oasis Townsville Chair, Lieutenant General John Caligari, said it was an exciting time for the organisation which has been building capacity to ensure they are ready to expand operations from the new Home Base and to provide vital services to the Ex-ADF community.

“We have been planning for the handover of the keys to this state-of-the-art facility for a long time and we are now busy moving in and preparing to shift gears in our operations to take advantage of our new Home Base,” Caligari said.

“Some works are still ongoing at the facility and our team is working alongside landscapers and finishing trades. We are being assisted by soldiers from 4 Regiment to move from our temporary office in the CBD to our new home.

“This impressive facility is highly anticipated, and it will play a vital role in supporting our veteran community for years to come so it is important that we take the time to ensure everything is ready before we officially open our doors.

“We acknowledge the work of the State and Federal Government’s in completing the construction and fit-out of The Oasis. This facility will become the Home Base for the Veteran Community to readily access support services and be a place the veteran community can come to and feel welcome and safe.

“We have some exciting plans that will commence from 1 June. It will take several months to expand operations. The we look forward to conducting a formal and grand opening in Veterans Health Week in October.

In the meantime, we invite the community to come and try great food and coffee at Dirty Boots Café, a veteran owned and operated business operating from the Veterans Home Base at The Oasis Townsville.”

The Oasis Townsville is a $10million Queensland Government owned facility situated at 1 Staging Camp Avenue, The Village, Oonoonba and leased to The Oasis Townsville.
