Defence Housing Australia Opens The Door To Pee Wee Hut

Wednesday 14 December 2022

On 14 December 2022, Defence Housing Australia (DHA) and The Oasis Townsville, will announce a new partnership that will see DHA sponsor The Oasis Townsville’s Pee Wee Hut 4, for three years.

The Chair of The Oasis Townsville LTGEN John Caligari, AO, DSC (Ret'd) said this sponsorship will help with the operational running of The Oasis Townsville to provide more services to the Veteran community.

“Townsville is the largest Garrison City in Australia, with the Defence Community making up around 20 per cent of our population. It makes sense that we partner with Defence Housing Australia to further activate our services to Veterans and their families” Mr. Caligari said.

“The Oasis Townsville provides three core programs, Planning and Linkages, Employment and Education and Social Connections programs and have over 1,000 participants a week engaging in activities.

“Every day there are activities running in our Huts. Everything from resume workshops, grant writing workshops, finance and budgeting workshops, Sewing programs, Qigong classes, Watercolour Art groups, scale modeling and podcasting. There is something for everyone.”

Defence Housing Australia provides housing and related services to Defence members and their families, which is a strategic link to the serving Veterans The Oasis Townsville supports.

Mr Caligari said we are always looking at key partnerships that can benefit the Veteran community within Townsville.

“There are about 700 Veterans transitioning out of Defence each year in Townsville and being able to provide relevant services and connecting Veterans with the right services and organisations, is vital to our role,” DHA Chair the Hon. Sandy Macdonald AM said.
