#CheckYourMates to Help Reduce Veteran Suicide

Wednesday 24 November 2021

North Queenslanders are being encouraged to #CheckYourMates this holiday period, to support those within the Townsville Defence Community who may be struggling with feelings of isolation or loneliness.

The Chair of The Oasis Townsville LTGEN John Caligari, AO, DSC (Ret'd) said one call or connection during a tough time can literally change a life.

“Townsville is the largest Garrison City in Australia, with the Defence Community making up around 20 per cent of our broader population. ADF suicide rates are significantly lower than the remainder of the community however when they leave the ADF the rate goes up significantly for both men and women,” Mr Caligari said.

“Operation Compass and The OASIS Townsville have joined forces to launch the 2021 #CheckYourMates campaign, with the aim of providing prevention through connection, which we know can give people a sense of purpose in their local community.

“#CheckYourMates encourages people in our community to check on five mates through a phone call, a catch-up, fishing, a game of golf, a meal or any activity that provides human connection and interaction.”

A series of powerful video messages from veterans, politicians and community leaders will be launched as part of the 2021 #CheckYourMates campaign.

Mr Caligari said the key themes of #CheckYourMates are Connect with Others, Yarn to Listen and Motivate to Act.

“By following these simple actions, you can challenge those who are travelling well to check in on five of their mates; while for those who aren’t travelling well, you’ll be able to offer support by encouraging them to seek help,” Mr Caligari said.
